» Hail to the King, Baby.

Hail to the King, BabySpeak of the Devil, and he will appear. A few days after my last post, Brewce called. He was transfered to Columbus, Ohio for rehab. With Amber by his side, he was able to visit his brother on day passes. He had made incredible progress. He still missed Skatopia, proving his love for Skateboarding is Legendary.  Eventually, he asked the doctors if he left if they’d arrest him. The kindly signed him out.

Hail to the King Baby, Brewce is back at Skatopia. All the worries and fears over lasting effects of his injury have been put to rest. He is doing great. He explained that the impact from the exploding tire compounded with a previous injury from his childhood. Given sufficient rest, he plans to skateboard as soon as possible.

Who knows what really happened when that tire hit his head. Some say, it unleashed Battle Bot Brewce. Others say he made a pact with the devil. Whatever it was, he has assured me Skatopia is taking a new direction; The desire to fill the farm with concrete is now secondary to the craze that’s consumed him. Speakers, Skateboards, Construction… Bigger, Large, Triumphant, Brewce will build a thrown as pope and a legend of skateboarding.

About the last post: I am one of the few who do not live at Skatopia.  Some “locals” dislike the fact an “outsider” (non-resident) is deeply involved.  They do not see the organization behind the scenes work.  And when Brewce was gone, some like Eric Martin, had changed passwords even during Bowl Bash to further his personal goals… whatever those are.  At the time Brewce needed us the most, some were petty and juvenile.

Brewce told me today,

There are many who think they’re in charge. They’re in for a rude awakening.

» The Once and Future Brewce

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

The short story: Brewce is okay. He should be out of the hospital and into rehab. Backwoods Blowout XV is coming. There is currently lack of good communication.

brewce-fireworksOn June 17th, Brewce Martin was majorly injured in what people reported to be a freak accident. This was a week before Bowl Bash XIV. Suddenly there was more at stake than Brewce’s health. The Holy Grail and the skate park’s secret is Brewce and Skatopia are one.

A fog of silence has fallen over the 88 Acres since Bowl Bash. Calls are going unanswered, messages unreturned, and the answering machines have not been changed. Brewce’s voice still announces a future that once was, “Bowl Bash XIV…”. Skatopia’s Myspace and old website have fallen into disrepair, and it seems that the farm has slipped into an unsettling hibernation.

A spark of life jolted on July, 11th when Skatopia the Movie made it’s world premiere in NYC’s Acefest. It sold out the small screening room (Capacity: 100) at Tribeca Cinemas. The usual suspects attended along with Black Death All Stars, McRad, and Shat playing the after party.

I wish I could express how the night came together as a stunning success. I wish I could say that I had drinks with a group of extraordinary individuals. I wish I could remember how my heart was tugged in that theater watching Brewce. Yet, a ticket wasn’t reserved for Bowl Bash XIV’s presenter.

Like a stream, time passes. Silence was an unsettling course. It meant Brewce was okay. But it also leaves the mind to wander in all directions. I returned to Pittsburgh and started work again on the punk and music scene there. It wasn’t until the second day (June 21st) of the CrimethInc Anarchist Convergence until I heard anything at all.

My father called, “I just got off the phone with Brewce. He’s been trying to track you down.” I got the number and instantly called Brewce himself.

“Hey. I’m here.” his resonating voice exclaimed.

We caught up. He congratulated me on Bowl Bash. And the future was clear: Backwoods Blowout and Brandon’s Birthday party are coming up. He asked me to come down to Skatopia to organize them. Lastly, he should be back at Skatopia right now with Amber driving him to rehabilitation during the week.

As for Backwoods Blowout XV:

Chances are Backwoods Blowout XV will be October 16th and 17th.
It’s going to be laid back, so there will only be 20 bands.
For booking, refer to the contact page.

If things differ, I am unaware.

» Skatopia Premeire at Acefest in NYC

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

The Skatopia Limo 2.0 arrived in New York July 11th with the usual suspects. This was not the usual skate tour, but instead something completely different. The mind of Brewce Martin, the man behind Skatopia, was premiering in front of a sold out crowd at Tribeca Cinemas.

Onlookers explored the world of the elusive cult leader. They watched his struggles with the women, debt, and the law. Once seen, it cannot be unseen.

» Skatopia Invades the Big Apple

Here is an update from Colin via Skatopiathemovie.com

MINI-SKATOPIA IN NYC FOR SKATOPIA DOC PREMIERE

PHOTOS, PHOTOS, PHOTOS !!!
We did it! Skatopia: 88 Acres of Anarchy premiered to a sold out plus crowd on Saturday night at the Tribeca Cinemas. We booked an adjacent screening room to accommodate the demand.

NYC’s skateboard community showed up along with media from Rolling Stone and Newsweek to skate magazines. The Skatopians drove up en masse with their green plaid limo and mingled with innocent film goers. The film cut across all boundaries and got a hugely positive response from both skaters and those who have never been to Skatopia or touched a skateboard.

The after party rocked with bands that have all played Skatopia – Black Death Allstars, Chuck Treece with McRad and Shat. It was a mini-Skatopia – complete with the latest Skatopia merchandise and free PBR donated by Pabst.

Brandon Martin led the charge up from Skatopia in the green plaid limo with over 20 Skatopians. Amber, Brewce’s girlfriend, took a brief break from caring for Brewce in the hospital to join the party for 24 hours. The word from Amber is that Brewce is making great strides every day, but definitely has a long rehab ahead of him.

Skatopia Film Festival Tour continues:

Golden, Colorado on August 7 and 8 at Docuwest Film Festival
Skatopians Rock the Front Range!! concrete, punk rock, plaid liousine

Seattle, Washington, on August 15 at Skateboard Film Festival
concrete parks, more Skatopians, another sell-out screening

» Brewce Martin in Critical Condition

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Update #3 Tuesday, June 23th, 2009

Brewce has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit at Cabell-Huntington Hospital. He is now able to eat, communicate, and is on the long road to recovery. He is unable to attend Bowl Bash XIV which starts Thursday.

We ask you keep up the positive energy and keep him and the the safety of all those traveling to Bowl Bash in your prayers.

We ask you keep up the positive energy and keep him and the the safety of all those traveling to Bowl Bash in your prayers.

Update #2 Saturday, June 20th, 2009

We’re all exhausted.

Amber has barely left Brewce’s side since the accident. Brandon has been going back and forth from working at Skatopia to visiting his father at the Hospital. And I, Foo, have been on the phone and myspace all day speaking to bands and Brewce’s well wishers.

We’re very grateful for having friends and family such as you. The positive outpour of energy is exactly what Brewce needs. Keep it up. He is doing better, but he isn’t out of the woods yet. Due to the type of injury, doctors have advised against visitors. What Brewce needs now is a quiet recovery. We ask instead you help out at Skatopia instead of coming to the hospital.

Bowl Bash XIV is still on.
This year’s Bowl Bash is a very special one. I chose the theme of Aspiration. Skatopia is Brewce’s Aspiration since his first mini-ramps out of doors in his bedroom. This Bowl Bash, musically and event wise, was one of mine. Over 100 bands are preforming: Folk, Punk, Bluegrass, and Metal. Green Jelly will be recording a live CD Friday and Saturday night. All the bands are playing for free making the entry free.

If you cannot make it out to Skatopia or Bowl Bash to help or attend, we are asking you donate money for concrete. When Brewce recovers we want to show him Skatopia met his aspirations and poured more concrete.

Brewce Martin in 1998

Last night I was informed, that Brewce Martin was injured and transported to a regional hospital.

Brewce had received major head trauma when a tire exploded in a tire shop near Skatopia. Surgery was preformed to relieve pressure around his brain caused by swelling. I have just gotten off the phone with the Cabell-Huntington Hospital where he is still in the ICU and listed under Critical condition as of June 18th, 2009 7:47PM.

Bowl Bash XIV 2009 will still be going on. We ask all bands, skaters, and patrons to attend to show love and support for Brewce Martin and his skateboarding legacy. You may find the band list at: http://skatopia.us/events/bowl-bash/bowl-bash-xiv/

Skatopia: 88 Acres of Anarchy the documentary about Brewce Martin, Skatopia, and his vision will have a sneak peak on Saturday June 27th at the Bowl Bash. From there, it will Premiere at the Acefest in New York. Further information the Premeire can be found at: http://acefest.bside.com/2009/films/skatopia88acresofanarchy_acefest2009

While Brewce and the Skatopia family appreciates your show of support, please avoid calling if at all possible, to keep the lines free for hospital related calls. Brandon would appreciated a well needed break.
